Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh

May Allaah make your heart firm upon Islaam

With regards to the expiation (of sins) for a gathering. Is it to be said before leaving the gathering while sitting or when you are standing up and you want to leave

Also, if the person was in a gathering and he did not speak much, however there was Laghw (idle talk, ill speech) does he have to say it? And does it expiate the sins that he listened to during the gathering? Moreover, does Wudu´ remove the sin, for example if a person is in a gathering and he listens to Laghw, and then he breaks his Wudu´, so he makes Wudu´ again, does this Wudu´ remove the sin of Laghw. May Allaah reward you with good and make you firm upon good.

The Prophet (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him) said:

The one who sits in a gathering, which has a lot of Laght (idle talk, sinful talk), and says
-before leaving this gathering

Subhanaka Allaah-Huma Wa-Bihamdik

O Allaah, You are free from every imperfection, Praise be to You

Ash-hadu An La Ilaha Illa Ant, Astaghfiruka Wa Atoobu Ilayk

I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except You (Allaah)

I ask Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance).

except that Allah would forgive him for that which took place in that gathering´´.

According to the text of the Hadeeth, the Du´a must be said before departing from the gathering.

Sheikh Bin Baaz (May Allaah have mercy on him) said: ´And there´s no harm if someone says it after standing up to depart.´

The origin of Laght: Different voices that are not understood, and what is meant by it here, is the talk that is sinful and the proof for that is the mentioning of forgiveness.

Also, the Prophet´s (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: ´except that Allaah would forgive him for that which took place in that gathering´, the saying is general, which includes Laght and listening to it without rebuking it, so it is all to be forgiven according to the Prophet´s (peace and blessings be upon him) saying.

And there are other narrations for this Hadeeth, where it states that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), used to say the Du´a when he joins a gathering, and Allaah knows best

As for Wudu´, then it removes minor sins according to the Hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) where he said:

When the Muslim (or ´Believing´) servant makes wudu and washes his face then the sin of everything he looked at with his eye, comes away with the water, or with the last drop of the water, and when he washes his hands then the sin of everything he stretched out his hands to, comes away with the water, or with the last drop of the water. And when he washes his feet every sin which his feet walked towards comes away with the water or with the last drop of the water - so that he leaves clean (clear/pure) from sins. Reported by Muslim, and Allaah knows best
