Introduction to Salafiyyah

Question
Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhSome of the sisters are asking about the Salaf and about the Salafi methodologySo we want from you O our Shaykh (May Allah bless you) to define the Salafi methodology, bearing in mind that people have some misconceptions about it
reply

Wa alaykum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh

I will write for you and for others an introduction to Salafiyyah, so that you know it

Salafiyyah is to follow the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) according to the way that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) and his companions and those who followed them in good and those who followed the followers in good were upon, without distortion, alteration, addition or deletion.

Allaah (The Most High, The Exalted) said in his noble book :

(Surat Al A´raaf: 3)

Allaah (The Most High, The Exalted) also said:

<[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses> (Surat Saad: 29)

He also said:

(Surat Al An´aam: 155)

Allaah said:

(Surat An-Nisaa´: 59).

And Allaah said:

(Surat An-Noor: 63).

So, here Allaah has shown that those who oppose the command of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) are upon great danger, and that a Fitnah (tribulation, affliction, punishment), Shirk, misguidance and a severe torment might befall them.

Allaah (The Most High, The Exalted) said:

(Surat Al-Hashr: 7).

Allaah also said:

(Surat Aal ´Imraan: 31-32).

All of these verse that we have mentioned indicate the obligation of following the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and the proofs for this affair are many.

Also, following the Qur´aan and Sunnah must be in accordance with the methodology that the Salafus-Saalih (Righteous Predecessors) were upon, and the Salafus-Saalih are those of the first three generations, and the first one of them is the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his noble companions. So, we should follow Qur'aan and Sunnah according to their understanding because Allaah (The Most High, The Exalted) said:

(Surat An-Nisaa´: 115).

´Imaam Al-Albaani (May Allaah have mercy upon him) said:

What is to be pointed out here with regards to this verse that Allaah (The Most High, The Exalted) mentioned: , is that he said after it : "and follows other than the believers way". So, why did Allaah say:

Why was the verse not:

Why did Allah say: ´

There is a great ´Ibrah (admonition, lesson, benefit) in it (saying: ), because every group and every sect upon earth today, (which their numbers have reached 73 maybe more or less, the does not matter, however the there are so many sects), each sect claims to be upon Qur'aan and Sunnah, to the extent that there is a new sect that claims to be upon Islaam and upon Qur'aan and Sunnah, while they are the ones that say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is not the last prophet, rather there are many prophets, even those people say: we are upon the Qur'aan and the Sunnah, and look at the rest of the sect whether old or new they all claim to be upon the Qur'aan and Sunnah. So, what is the ruling upon these sects as they all claim to be upon the Qur'aan and Sunnah?

The answer is in this verse and in the pre-mentioned two Hadiths. The verse says:

Meaning: any sect that follows a different path from the path of the first believers who were upon guidance and Baseerah (sightedness, knowledge, certainty) in their religion, even if this sect claims that it is upon the Qur'aan and Sunnah, so as long as it opposes the way of the Muslims and the Jamaa´ah of the Muslims, then this is a proof that this sect is from the misguided sects.´ (Al-Albaani)

Allaah said:

< And the first to embrace Islam of the Muhajirun (those who migrated from Makkah to Al-Madinah) and the Ansar (the citizens of Al-Madinah who helped and gave aid to the Muhajirun) and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith). Allah is well-pleased with them as they are well-pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success.> (Surat At-Tawbah: 100).

´Imaam At-Tabari said: As for those who followed the first Muhajireen and Ansaar in faith, they are those who submitted to Allaah with Islaam and took the path (of the Muhajiroon and Ansaar) in Hijrah, Nusrah (Support of the Deen of Allaah), and good deeds.´

Ibn Katheer said:
´Those who follow them with Ihsaan (with good, with faith) are the ones who follow their good way, their beautiful description and they make Du´aa for them in secret and in public.´

And the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) said:

"The best people are those living in my generation, and then those who will follow them, and then those who will follow the latter. Then there will come some people who will bear witness before taking oaths, and take oaths before bearing witness." (agreed upon)

The Prophet´s (peace and blessings be upon him) generation is his companions, those who follow them are the Tabi´een and the third ones are the followers of the Tabi´een.

Also the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

´Indeed those who came before you from the people of the book divided into 72 sects, and this nation (Muslims) will divide into 73 sects, 72 in Hell and one in Jannah, and it´s Al-Jamaa´ah,´ (Narrated by Abu Dawood and others). And the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said in another narration about the saved sect: ´What I and my companions are upon´.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

"I advise you to fear Allah, and obey and accept (your leaders), even if he be a Habshi slave, be- cause the one among you who will live after me, shall witness many discords. It is incumbent on you (to hold fast) onto my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Guided Khulafaa Raashideen. Hold fast unto it, and hold on tight with your molar teeth. Beware and stay away from new (modern) ideas and acts. For every new act (that is thought to be a part of religion) is Bid´ah, and every Bid´ah (leads) astray". (Narrated By Abu Dawood and others).

So all these proofs indicate the obligation of following the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah according to the understanding of the righteous predecessors (Assalafus-Saalih), and that we should not follow or comprehend it according to our desires.

Moreover, the most important affair that this Manhaj (methodology) calls to, is the Tawheed (oneness, singling out, monotheism) of Allaah, which is to single Him out with everything that is specific to Him, and to stand against what opposes it (Tawheed) from Shirk and it´s types. And to follow the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and to worship Allaah as He loves and with what pleases Him. Also, to fight what opposes Tawheed and Sunnah, like innovations and superstitions, and to preserve the clarity and purity of the Deen. And Allaah knows best.
